Free AntiVirus

A bit like parking your new bike outside your house without a lock on it, using your computer without an anti-viral protection programme installed is asking for trouble…. And you can bet that, although your bike might be ok in a safe neighbourhood, your computer will be found at one time or another if you are not protected.

Many Anti-viral programmes can be the additional cost that tips using a computer into the expensive zone, after broadband and connection costs are taken into account, so luckily there are plenty of free, proven anti-virus programmes out there waiting to be installed on your computer for no cost… thus protecting your computer for free.

But, how effective are these free programmes?

Like with most things, if you pay for something you will receive a finer product. And the same is true with anti viral programmes. However, for the casual user who uses the internet for emailing, some downloading and general usage, a free programme should suit their needs.

Before you log on and start the download process remember the following: anti viral programmes take up computer memory. If you have an older computer or one with lots of programmes taking up the memory, to avoid having your computer revert to dial-up speeds (kids, that’s a bit like when you wrote letters instead of emails) it might be right to check on the memory used first and use space needed as part of your decision making process.

Also use a programme that has a daily check and update, that helps filter out viruses and re-charge the system against attack. If there is an automatic update on the programme, so much the better- otherwise remind yourself to do so, at least once a week.

No system, however much you pay, will ever be totally protective against viruses. However, it doesn’t necessarily take flashy technology to help yourself, either. It means not opening fishy looking emails, being careful about which websites you log on to, using different passwords and even doing simple things like fully turning your computer off when not using it. Every little helps, as they say….
